Historic Home Renovation

interior and exterior renovations

Three years ago, the historic Dillingham Hall at Vermont College (West Street, Montpelier, VT) was purchased as a single family residence.  After having been used as residence when it was first built, it has since been used as a girls dormitory, and offices.  The new owners have taken on the project of renovating this property back into the glorious family home it once was.

Our first project was to build a kitchen, as this central room had been eliminated at some point along the way.  The owners gutted two rooms (the original kitchen and pantry), at which point Clar Construction stepped in to build out the new kitchen.  We believe the final project nicely retains many of the original details of the house (wainscot, wood moldings etc.) while incorporating the owners personal style in cabinetry, lighting and layout.

The kitchen features painted cabinetry, with a central island. The counters are black granite.

Note the peninsula with wainscot detail to match the original walls.

The owners wanted to create a more open floor plan, so we created a framed opening between the living room and dining room.  Having properly added structural elements in a load bearing wall, our wood shop milled and installed custom moldings that perfectly replicate the existing molding profiles.  Here we used quarter sawn white oak on the dining room side, and birch on the living room side to match the other moldings in each room.
