Deep Energy Retrofit/Remodel

Montpelier, VT

We were contracted by the Snells to complete a renovation of their house in which the primary focus was to increase the energy efficiency of the building.  The renovated house is an example of a deep energy retrofit that will have an enormous impact on the amount of fuel required to heat it.  The project is registered with Efficiency Vermont under their gut-rehab program and will therefore be eligible for certain tax rebates and incentives.  CCI recently became a Home Builder partner with Energy Star.

The walls are 10” thick (R-38 with cellulose insulation) and careful attention has been given to framing details to eliminate thermal bridging.  The windows and doors are high performing triple glazed sash with a heat mirror film within.

We opened this project up to the public before the drywall got installed so that people could see what the “bones” of this super-insulated house looks like.  There was a tremendous response - about 150 individuals came through to see a great sample of a remodel that has significant impact on fuel use, and will create a warm, comfortable interior.

We dramatically changed the window and door openings on the south side of the house, and we therefore rebuilt the entire 44’ long south side of the house.

new south wall framing.  Note the double stud detail used to create the 10” cavity.  Also note the extensive air sealing prior to insulation

This project is underway as this website is getting updated.  Check back soon for finish photos of the remodel that will include the new kitchen, bath, and other interior finishes.

The original floor system was gutted due to its severe undulations.
